Hello! My approach to services is strengths-based and person centered. I truly believe that individuals are the experts in their own lives. My goal is to help you identify where you are struggling and walk alongside you as you learn new skills and discover your resilience and strengths. I believe in empowering people to help themselves by building confidence in their abilities and discovering all the wonderful things they are capable of.

I have experience working with youth and their families in both inpatient residential settings and outpatient community settings. I specialize in trauma-focused care in children and adolescents. Much of my experience has been working with individuals who have experienced trafficking, as well as youth who have run from home or are experiencing homelessness. I have also worked with BIPOC youth and those who identify with the LGBTQIA+ community. My experience also includes extensive group therapy work for a multitude of concerns including; anger management, skills for managing anxiety and depression, mindfulness, self-control, poor self-esteem and body issues, and navigating trauma symptoms.

I have had specific training conducting trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy both in person and via telehealth. My training and experience also includes incorporating holistic approaches to care and working through inter-generational and systemic trauma. I have had training in family therapy approaches and believe in creating a space for families to come together and learn to positively communicate so that they may self-create safe, secure, and healthy family systems. I also believe that one size does not fit all and I enjoy being able to incorporate things like art, movement, and music into my practice.

Hello, my name is Sarah and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I've been working as a mental health professional with youth and families for over 10 years. My native language is English and my second language is Spanish. I lived two years in Spanish speaking countries, Spain and Ecuador, while studying and working. I’m an Oregon native who enjoys getting outside and moving. The water is where I find my peace, whether it be watching the waves crash on the shore at the Oregon Coast or paddleboarding.

I’ve worked in a variety of settings including high schools, Telehealth, in person and community-based services. I’ve worked with marginalized populations including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, teens and young adults experiencing first episode psychosis, trauma, anxiety, paranoia, OCD, intrusive thoughts, suicide ideation and depression.

Being a teen and transitioning into adulthood into our twenties can seem overwhelming. I’m passionate about positively impacting my clients by providing support to meet their goals. I look for ways to improve mental health and remove barriers with a client centered trauma informed approach. I have training in  many different modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and Play Therapy among others. However I think the most important part of growth is the relationship that you form with your therapist. Building relationships based in trust, unconditional positive regard, assuming positive intent, and containing empathy translates to more positive relationships outside of the therapist's office. 

I received my bachelors degree from Portland State University in Science. Later in life, I discovered my passion for helping people, and began to understand my identity as a black man, who grew up fishing and hunting in rural Oregon, could offer unique perspectives to other’s experiences. That inspired me to return to Portland State University in which I received my Masters of Social Work degree. Since completing my degree in 2019, I have been working with elementary and middle school students, providing therapy in school settings. I have also worked in County Mental Health supporting Adults coping with addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, and helping to build healthier relationships.

I believe that people have a choice about their behavior, but they are also a product of their environment and experience, influenced by culture and relationships. I work with my clients to raise awareness of their motivations and goals, and to gain control of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The client is the expert on their own experience, and the counselor is the expert on change who helps the client recognize their strengths for overcoming barriers. I build a therapeutic relationship with clients based on empathy, curiosity, and respect. I celebrate diversity and I advocate for people from all populations, especially those from marginalized and oppressed groups.

Prior to becoming a counselor, I was an advocate for victims of crime, specializing in domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. I have specialized training in the dynamics of abusive relationships and trauma-informed care. I am also passionate about supporting first responders, veterans, caregivers, and people who frequently witness or hear about trauma in their professional or personal lives.

Additionally, I have been an elementary school counselor, so I like working with children and families on social emotional development. My theoretical approach to counseling is based on cognitive behavioral therapy with influences from narrative therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness. One of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou summarizes my feelings about counseling:

Hello, welcome to my Stronger Oregon Page! My name is Kristy McPeak (she/her/hers) and I'm a Professional Counselor Associate registered in the state of Oregon. I wanted to share a little bit about my educational background, therapeutic style and clients served.

My college experience began in 2012, when I graduated with a Certificate of Addiction Counseling, and later earned a B.S. in Human Development and Family Sciences with a Minor in Psychology. During that time, my work with adolescents and young adults in a variety of therapeutic, and non-profit settings led me to continue my educational journey, and in 2016 I received a Master’s in Counseling from Oregon State University, with an emphasis in both school and mental health counseling.

I enjoy working with clients across the life-span including children, adolescents, young people and adults. I have experience helping with anxiety, family and life transitions, addiction, teen pregnancy, depression, ADHD, trauma and loss.

My therapeutic style is rooted in compassion, person-centered, and collaborative in nature. I believe we all experience times where we need support, and it takes courage to reach out for help. Each of us has unique needs that can change over time, and counseling is individualized to each person’s situation. You are an important part of the therapeutic process, and the work that we do together. I place a great deal of value in the counseling relationship and believe you have inherent worth.

I strive to create a trauma-informed and supportive environment, where you feel valued and heard throughout the counseling process. I also honor the importance of mind and body wellness, taking a holistic approach. As counseling is individualized to meet the diverse needs of my clients, I use an integrative lens which includes using the following theoretical orientations: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Therapy (MBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Somatic and Art Therapy.

My name is Erika and I graduated with my Masters in Mental Health Counseling in 2017. I have worked with kids/families and adults. I have experience with substance abuse, trauma, co occurring and major mental illness. Some places I have worked include Schools, with various Homeless Communities, Prisons and Jails.

Modalities include DBT, CBT, SFBT, and motivational interviewing. I also have experience with suicide idealization/planning and self harm. I have used some play therapy techniques with kids and aspire to become a registered play therapist.

Our Work Together

For adults:

I have been described as calm, grounded, attentive, and caring. I believe healing cannot be forced and we go at your own pace. At the same time, we will remain attentive to what in your life is wanting to change, and I will help you find courageous action to make it happen. Joy reveals what nourishes our true self. Grief shows us what we have loved, and what we want to preserve. Fear reveals the edge of what we know, and where we might grow.

My “theoretical approach” draws upon the principles of attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology to create an environment of safety and trust. Here you can come into deeper knowing of your own feelings, and discover what you truly value and want from life and relationships. From this place of knowing, the courage to make change, the ability to accept what we cannot, “and the wisdom to know the difference” can all be found.

Rather than looking for canned answers or interventions, I give attention to what is happening between us in the moment. As trust is built between us, old relationship patterns, limited ways of thinking, and unfelt feelings appear for exploration and healing. You will be held in acceptance while also challenged to follow where the seed of life is wanting to grow within you.

My degree is in Clinical Social Work, and my employment background is in crisis work. In times of emotional confusion or intense pain, I use mindfulness-based skills and expressive art practices (drawing, poetry, song) to help you find safety and expression for overwhelming emotions, thoughts, or images so that they can be felt and understood. Panic and anxiety can be soothed, grief can be expressed, and depression transformed into creativity.

I am deeply influenced by Jungian ideas and my own experiences as a psychotherapy client are rooted in this framework. You are welcome to bring your night dreams, visionary imagination, and creative work into our conversations. I also incorporate ecotherapy and look to Nature as a third partner in our work, as I believe that the Earth is our first source for healing, and our deepest teacher on relationships and wholeness.

Gender, race, sexuality, disability, body type, cultural background, and other forms of lived identity are important parts of who we are. In our sessions you will be empowered to witness and draw strength from all parts of yourself, seen and unseen.

For some, “feeling better” can happen in a matter of moments. For others, the healing journey becomes the privilege of a lifetime. You can expect from our time together that you will be given usable practices to find relief from emotional distress, while also receiving support to carry forward the healing into and with your own life. What we do will reflect what you want and need at this time. I look forward to meeting you!

For kids:

I enjoy being a children’s therapist because I love spending time with kids! For fun, I enjoy music, singing, learning about plants and animals (like my friend Jennifer, the chicken in the photo), writing, and being outside with my family. I have a French bulldog named Lily who loves to go for walks around Salem. My family loves card games, especially Magic the Gathering and Pokémon. As a mom, I know the joys and challenges of being a parent, and as a former child, the confusion and excitement of growing up.

As your therapist, we will spend time together playing, drawing, singing, reading books, or talking. If you have been hurt, I will be a safe adult to talk to, who can help you make sense of what happened. If following directions is confusing or difficult, or if you have feelings that are sometimes “too big” to control, we can talk together about how to make sense of them and how to ask for help. If friendships are difficult, we can practice how to make friends and be a friend. If you have a game you want to play, I will be excited to play it with you! I am with you however you want to be that day. Our time together is just for you.
