As someone who identifies as bicultural, I can empathize with the many barriers associated with finding a provider who can understand various cultural differences that take place in our world. I want to help you reach your goals in a way that works best for you and your learning style. My theoretical framework is person centered and trauma informed, to provide you with the most personalized experience. I like to incorporate multiple therapy perspectives that include; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as Mindfulness.

I have experience working in crisis services as well as outpatient Telehealth settings. My educational background includes completing a Masters in Applied Psychological Science from Pacific University. During my studies, I participated in a year-long clinical internship that focused on supporting people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Anxiety using the evidence based practice of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I enjoy working with people of various backgrounds who are struggling to manage their symptoms of anxiety or depression and are looking for support in taking back control of their lives.

I am committed to creating an environment that is inclusive and respectful to all people regardless of race, color, culture, religion, spiritual practice, sex, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

As an Indigenous person, I deeply acknowledge that a sense of personal identity is integral for a culturally-informed healing and learning journey. My sessions typically include holistic approaches to well-being, such as grounding based on traditional values and empowerment, using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I use approaches that are evidence-based and allow for specialized therapy based on your values.

My educational background includes a Masters of Arts in Applied Psychological Science at Pacific University, which focused on integrating counseling skills with research, and my Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Portland State University. I also completed a six-month clinical internship at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, where I gained knowledge in cultural responsiveness among rural and Indigenous people. Currently, I am a Professional Counselor Associate working toward full licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor under the supervision of a clinical supervisor.

I believe that therapy is a collaborative effort. Ultimately, my goals are your goals, and we'll work together to best meet your needs. If you're ready to talk, I'm here to listen.

I believe that everyone can reach an optimum state of health. I employ an eclectic (or including all kinds of therapy types) approach with a strong reliance on cognitive-behavioral aspects. I am trained in EMDR, Trauma-Focused CBT, PCIT therapy, Infant/Toddler Mental Health, mindfulness techniques, and possess a certificate in Substance Abuse Treatment. I also have several years experience and training with sexual assault and domestic violence.

For my formal education and training; after completing my bachelor degree and obtaining a Substance Abuse Certificate, I realized I was not able to assist clients with trauma or other issues. So, I went back to school to get the degree I needed to be able to help all the people who came to me. Now, I have a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.

My career began with teenagers in residential treatment for substance abuse, after this I worked with a younger group of 5-11 year olds in residential treatment for behavior problems. From there I moved to adults with legal issues and substance abuse, while having a second job as a sexual assault counselor. I have worked with very young children, under 1 year old and their parents, as well as older adults who are in need of resolving old conflicts in their past so they can look forward to the future and all others in between.

The therapy techniques we use depend on you and what works best for you, this is a team effort with you in the lead. Let’s talk about how I can help you today. I welcome all ages and backgrounds.

I was born in Portland and grew up in the Northwest, graduating from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR before working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Oregon for 17 years. I returned to graduate school at mid-life and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2006. I completed my clinical license (LCSW) in Montana, while working at the largest elementary school in the state for 8 years, before returning to Oregon to be closer to my family.

While in Montana I practiced individual and group therapy with children and their families. I also coached and refereed youth and middle school football for 10 years and use motivational interviewing and life coaching techniques in my daily practice.

I am a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), which is short term in nature and focuses on providing you tools and new ways to think about your problems, so you can begin to start making needed changes in your life. There are no magic pills or painless solutions to most life issues, but CBT can give you the tools you need to help you make the small and larger changes needed for your life to start improving. It is up to you.

I help people who realize that some things in their life are not working and need to change. The world has shifted and we need to adapt to rapidly changing events beyond our control; as well as get some daily relief from the ongoing stress, anxiety, poor sleep and depression many people face daily.

Since February 2020 I have been doing remote Teletherapy with adults and older teens and found it works to help people change their lives. Be prepared to do your homework, I always give you more to do between our sessions, so you can progress at your own pace.

If you would like to work with me, please complete the application below.

My name is Shantel and I am a licensed practicing counselor associate in Salem, Oregon. As a mental health professional, I am most interested in finding the part of your life that feels off-balance and helping you find balance again.

I completed my Bachelors of Psychology at Oregon State University and completed my Masters in Forensic Psychology at Capella University.

I have worked with children, teens, and young adults in correctional and in residential facilities.

I specialize in working with individuals who have intellectual and cognitive disabilities as well as youth struggling with anger and behavioral issues. I use an eclectic approach that intertwines different approaches in order to target an area of your life that you feel is off-balance.

I integrate person-centered, strength-based, cognitive-behavioral, and play therapy in order to tailor what works best for you. When working with youth, I rely on family collaboration to encourage the youth to use the skills they have learned in therapy in their home environment.

I have lived on the South Coast of in Oregon for six years. I am very fortunate to be working as a mental health counselor for Stronger Oregon as it has been rewarding and fostered my personal and professional growth.

I have training and experience in treating anxiety, depression, adult ADHD, adult spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.

I graduated in 1986 from the University of Utah where I was first trained in the cognitive behavioral approach. I worked as a paraprofessional at the University of Utah Counseling Center for 18 months, learning and applying CBT for general and test anxiety, depression, assertiveness training, mindfulness and meditation.

I was also the teacher's assistant for the psychology of dreams class for six years. I became a father of four children and went back to graduate school in 1998 and graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling with Mental Health Specialization from the University of Pheonix in 2001. I have held an LPC since 2003.

I was a clinical director for 14 years in Utah prior to moving to Oregon in 2016. I am very proficient in diagnosing mental health conditions, but I work with a person, not a diagnosis.

My background includes a Master’s Degree in Dance/Movement Therapy, with over 38 years of experience working with people of all ages, backgrounds and orientations.  I use a variety of therapeutic techniques, depending on what works best for each individual.  I have over 100 hours of training in grief and loss, with five years of experience working for a hospice organization.  I also have many hours of continuing education in the area of trauma, and how to help people not only cope with, but move past the trauma to live more fulfilled lives.  In addition to insight-oriented and cognitive therapy approaches, I am excited to incorporate the Emotional Freedom Technique into my practice, to give people practical and easy ways to help themselves.

My approach is person centered and strengths-based, seeing each person as the expert on themselves and emphasizing strengths rather than problems.  I offer support, teach skills, and provide a safe and comfortable space for you to express yourself and explore feelings.  Although therapy is work, I incorporate humor in my practice.  As a dancer and dance/movement therapist, I appreciate the concepts of the mind-body connection, as what affects the mind or emotions, affects the body, and vise a versa.  For this reason, I often encourage people to participate in activities that will engage both mind and body.

I have also lead many groups, including dance/movement therapy groups, grief support groups, and groups for specific populations (ie, Geriatric, Schizophrenic, deaf children).  I have taught dance, worked as an artist model, and set up a peer mediation program for a Jr. High and High School in Arizona.  I have been a dancer (ballet, modern), an inline skater, a skier, and hiker.  Lately, I have enjoyed gardening and landscaping, taking drives to the beach, and watching British television.  I have lived long enough to see how we reinvent ourselves over time, and I continue to do that.  I feel this experience gives me empathy to help others reinvent themselves too.

If you would like to work with me.

I believe counseling must be a collaborative effort in which the client and clinician work together to identify needs, concerns, aspirations, and to develop a clear vision for the work they are to do together. My role as a counselor is to help guide individuals through the process of discovering their inherent strengths and barriers which can involve identifying and working through past and/or present conflicts. Collaboration is a key element in my practice as we work together to build a healthy therapeutic relationship where we can experience trust, empathy, and acceptance, and respect for all parties involved.

The counseling process may look different for each client. The approach used and the length of treatment may vary due to individual needs and circumstances. Clients always have the right to stop counseling at any point in treatment and/or choose a different counselor. If the client need is outside of my scope of practice I will inform the client and refer when possible. The counseling process is not easy and there are no guarantees. Initially, it may be disruptive to the client’s emotional experiences and/or relationships, however, this is a normal part of the counseling process.

I graduated from Corban University with a Masters in Family Life Studies in 2014. Shortly upon graduation I began my counseling career with Youth Villages Intercept program, where I continue to provide intensive in home services to children and their families. In 2017, I decided to become a clinical supervisor with Youth Villages Intercept program. Currently (2020), I provide direct care to families and supervise. I am a trauma informed clinician certified in TF-CBT. I am also a collaborative problem solving certified clinician through Think Kids.
